As fad diets continue to be on the rise, so will sales of many “magic” weight loss pill products.
Although the market is littered with supplements advertising false and exaggerated claims, there are a handful of scientifically supported, metabolically significant ingredients that are worth reading into. Always research potential supplements to make sure there is sound evidence to uphold the claims. When choosing a weight loss product, if the claims sound outrageous and too good to be true, then it probably is. Move on!
Many supplement products carry proven ingredients but unfortunately may contain unhealthy fillers and binders. Other brands add extra amounts of these ingredients than needed just to hike up the price. We’ll show you how to avoid these!
The ingredients in a weight loss products commonly are a concentrated form of herbal extracts found in nature. However, it may not be practical to consume in it’s original form because it may not taste good, or may be difficult to eat or drink effective amount.
Here are a list of 6 weight loss ingredients that have proven themselves through scientific research, and why the supplement version makes more sense than the food version
1). Tonalin CLA
“Conjugated Linoleic Acid” was identified by Dr. Michael Pariza in 1978 during his study of beef extract for cancer prevention. Dr. Pariza’s initial findings suggested that CLA can 1) reduce body fat and 2) help maintain lean muscle tissue. Today the most common form of “CLA” extract is “Tonalin”, which is a plant oil derived from safflower.
The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition published a study showing that in humans, CLA was best at burning stubborn belly fat.
How does it work?
There are 3 main ways the CLA helps to burn fat:
- Scientist found that CLA helps to block a receptor called PPAR which results in the reduction of fat cell formation.
- CLA enhances the activity of 2 muscle proteins (UPC and CPT) which help to boost metabolism.
- CLA feeds the cells in your bones and muscle to help their growth which burns fat.
Why not just eat more beef to get CLA?
Significant amounts of CLA is only found in grass-fed beef (there are very low amounts of CLA in conventional grain-fed beef). The clinically effective dose of CLA is 3500 mg daily, while beef consumption for the average person eating grass-fed beef would be about 200 mg of CLA in 1 day. In other words, you would need to eat 17 servings of beef a day to obtain the equivalent of a high quality CLA supplement.
2) Green Coffee
Green coffee has been studied for weight loss because of its proven effect on lowering blood pressure and improving blood sugar levels. The clinically studied and commercially available form of Green Coffee is known as “Svetol” which is a decaffeinated extract derived from the Robusta Coffee Bean.
How does it work?
Green Coffee “Svetol” inhibits an enzyme that helps make sugar in your blood called “Glucose-6-Phosphate.” This also reduces the intestinal absorption of sugar into your blood. If there is less sugar available for energy, your body will look for other forms of energy, namely stored fat. There are 9 clinical studies involving Svetol that have determined it is a safe supplement for weight loss.
Why not just drink more Green Coffee?
The clinically effective dose of Svetol is 400 mg, which is equivalent to 3 to 6 cups of coffee, and the extract/pill form provides all the fat burning/blood sugar benefits without the caffeine overdose.
3) Garcinia Cambogia
Garcinia cambogia is a small pumpkin-shaped fruit from southern India that contains a weight loss ingredient known as HCA (Hydroxycitric Acid). It has been used for centuries in India as a spice and is a good source of vitamin C.
How does it work?
HCA works to helps the body lose weight in 2 ways:
- Stops the ATP-citrate lyase ezyme (this enzyme turns sugar into fat and cholesterol)
Why not just eat the Garcinia Fruit?
The weight loss ingredient HCA is actually found in the rind of the fruit. Garcinia is very sour which in most cases makes it unpalatable to eat raw. It’s normally used in India as a spice substitute for Tamarind. Eating several Garcinia rinds a day would be unpractical (if not impossible), that is why the HCA extract in pill form is recommended.
LeptiCore A mixture of different plant substances and oils, as well as pomegranate extract and blue-green algae. These ingredients help your body respond better to appetite-control hormone known as “Leptin”. Leptin is a hormone that signals your brain that you are “full” and to “stop eating”. It is produced by your fat cells. But when you have too much fat in your body you’re going to make too much leptin. This means your brain stops reacting to the leptin because of the overload, which makes your appetite go out of control.
How does it work?
- Pomegranate Extract – Decreases the activity of a compound known as “C-Reactive Protein” which results in less inflammation and cholesterol in the body. This helps leptin cross into your brain better to suppress your appetite.
- Blue-Green Algea extract – Helps to increase the activity of Serotonin to suppress appetite.
Why not just eat more Pomegranate and Blue-Green Algae?
Since LeptiCore is a combination of different plant ingredients, it’s hard to say that you would get the full benefit of the cocktail by just eating 2 of the ingredients. Fresh Algea is hard to come by, and no matter what health food store you go to, you’ll probably only find it in powdered or tablet form. The pomegranate extract provides the benefits of the fruit without the sugar and calories.
5) Green Tea
The weight loss ingredient in Green Tea is known as “Phytosome”, commercially available as “GreenSelect”
How it works
Phytosome releases a substance in the human body called EGCG which burns calories.
Why not drink more Green Tea?
The Phytosome extract makes it easier for the body to absorb the EGCG, and has a higher concentration of the primary weight loss component.
6) Bitter Orange
Is a fruit also known as “Citrus Aurantium” that flowers from the evergreen trees native to South Asia.
The clinically studied Bitter Orange extract is “p-synephrine” commercially available as “Advantra Z” helps increase metabolism, control appetite and to support normal digestion.
How does it work?
Bitter Orange extract stimulates a receptor in the body called “Beta-3 Adreno-receptor” (found mainly on fat cells) which increases metabolism without affecting your heart rate and blood pressure.
Why not eat more Bitter oranges?
Bitter Oranges look good, but there are very sour and bitter in taste. Usually the peel is cooked in syrup to make a marmalade. The fat-burning ingredient in Citrus Aurantium is in the rind, so even if you can stomach eating the fleshy inside, it’s the peel that contains the weight loss properties.[/fusion_text]
How Do I choose the right brand or product?
There are many brands out there that carry the same weight loss support ingredients, however not all of them are made the same. In light of recent reports of supplement fraud at GNC and CVC, finding trustworthy supplementation can be tedious.
Several brands add unnecessary fad ingredients that do not have any validity to them. Others may add the ingredients mentioned above, but the increase the amount of it just to make it more expensive, but does not make it more helpful.
I personally have been using the Transitions Lifestyle (TLS) product line for several years because of their thorough 3-party quality control testing, diverse and professional medical review board, and popular recommendation by health professionals in their doctor’s offices.
